Money-Saving Maniac Ideas December 26, 2008

I’ve always seen my friend, Heidi, as a money-saver, trying to get the best deals. Now I call her my money-saving maniac friend. Here are some ideas from her.

Free on-line radio (from Heidi):www.pandora.com is a free online radio website. You type in the name of an artist you like, and they’ll only play music that is in that same style or genre…There are no commercials either.

Free magazine Subscription (from Heidi) I don’t know how much longer it lasts:

Stretching the Dollar with soap(from Heidi): I use just regular liquid dial, or the off brand of liquid dial. Not the creamy kind, but the clear kind. You put in about half an inch of soap into the bottom of those bath/body works fluffy soap containers, and then you fill the rest with water up to the top. Then you put the cap on and start tipping and turning it slowly. I learned the hard way that it will go crazy with suds if you shake it, so we just tip and turn.

It’s so easy, and I’ve even taught Josiah (my son) how to refill our soaps now (which he thinks is fun!). We bought the huge dial at Costco for $5 on coupon, and at this rate it will probably last 30 years!

Stretching the Dollar with Dryer Sheets- (Heidi -I don’t know if you remember telling me this tip years ago). Cut them in 1/2 and reuse them. You can make one go 4-6 times.

Stretching the Dollar with Baby Wipes- Cut them in 1/2 and reuse them. As I (Sonja) was using them at first, I was thinking, ‘I am wasting’ so much of the wipe’, so I cut them in half, and I used as many as I needed. I used more of the square footage of the baby wipes. I will use reusable cloth wipes when I have a child consistently in cloth diapers.

HOMEMADE 409 (from H)

Adapted from the book “Clean House, Clean Planet” by Karen Logan

1 trigger spray bottle

2 Tablespoons distilled white vinegar

1 teaspoon of borax

Water

1/8 of a cup of mild liquid dish soap

I put a funnel in the top of my spray bottle and put in the vinegar, borax and then 1 cup of hot water to dissolve it. Then I add enough cool water to almost fill it to the top and pour the dish soap in last. Don’t shake. This costs me about 35 cents per bottle versus $3 to $4 per bottle for the store brand. And it’s great for food surfaces and bathrooms because white vinegar is a disinfectant.

Homemade Cleaners: This particular tip from Heidi reminds me of a blog from a friend, Kim on August 31, 2008 on Homemade Cleaners. Look it up, and there are some really great ideas!

Kim’s Blog

Recipe (from Heidi) Baked Sugar Donuts

2 cans of refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
6 Tbsp. melted butter
2/3 cup sugar

Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Separate the biscuits, flatten each to a 2 1/2 inch round.
With 1 inch round biscuit cutter or knife, cut hole in center of each round.
Dip all sides of biscuits and centers into butter, then into sugar.
Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 12-14 minutes or until golden brown.

Bath and Body Works: They are starting their major sale tomorrow, according to the internet (12/29 according to printed ads I’ve received from them). The body creams, my fav., are on sale for $3. I don’t know how long it lasts.

GIFTS: This is the time of the year to start shopping for Christmas/all gifts for next year. I have a “gift box” at home that I fill with different items I find through out the year. In November I pull them out and evaluate what I have and still need to get.
